POLISH GRAVES IN BLOCKLEY CEMETERY

Blockley cemetery  located on a slope with a back drop of trees and views of the rolling Cotswold hills is more than just a village cemetery, it is also the resting place of over one hundred and thirty WW2 Polish displaced  persons that lived  in nearby disused army camps of Springhill and Northwick Park. Most of the graves have a name and date,  but sadly there are about a dozen unmarked graves where the crosses and plaques have been lost in time and a handful where the inscription is difficult to read.

In Polish they all ask to "Honour Their Memory"

In Poland on All Souls day relatives visit cemeteries to lay flowers and light candles in remembrance of their loved ones. This tradition carries on wherever there are Poles and Polish graves. Although the Polish Camp closed in 1970 and the inhabitants moved to towns and villages far beyond Northwick Park, yet once a year a small group of people that grew up in the camp  meet  in Blockley cemetery to pay  their respects to friends and family that are buried there. Some feel so strongly about this little corner of their past that they have bought and reserved their place in the cemetery.

Today many of the gravestones have become dangerous. With no living relatives and through lack of funds the local authority have laid down many of the crosses as a safety precaution but there is a real risk that in time they will disappear altogether and no trace will remain of the Polish community that lived there. It would be nice if funds could be raised for the restoration of the Polish graves. Let us not forget that many of those buried there fought for our freedom.
